Winchester
Visited Tue 11 July
Started in 1079 and dedicated in 1093, a massive Norman statement of power in the former capital of England. The longest medieval cathedral in Europe. Only the transepts remain in their Norman form - the rest has been "modernised" at different times. Entrance fee kindly waived. Stayed for Evensong, sustained by ice cream from the gift shop. Would more people stay for Evensong if the tea shop remained open until shortly before the service? (Here and in many other cathedrals...)
